College Of Education - Dean's Welcome

image of Dean Paula WoodWelcome to the web site for the College of Education at Wayne State University.  We continually strive to provide information on our web site about all facets of the college with the goal of answering any questions you may have about our programs, faculty, etc.

The college offers bachelors, masters, education specialist and doctoral degree programs in thirty-seven different program areas.  These programs are administered by the college’s four academic divisions: Administrative and Organizational Studies (AOS); Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies (KHS); Teacher Education (TED); and Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations (TBF).  These divisions are assisted by the Office of the Dean and two support areas: the Division of Academic Services (AS) and the Education Technology Center (ETC).   Additionally, we often participate in various special programs and projects aimed at providing service to the community and profession.

Wayne State University is located in the vibrant cultural center of metropolitan Detroit.  It is the third largest university in Michigan with an enrollment of over 32,000 students.  It is a nationally acclaimed research university and a member of the Carnegie I Research Universities.  The College of Education, which began as a Teacher’s College in 1881, has received research funding this past year exceeding $8.5 million.   Many of the programs in the college are award winning and have received national recognition for their innovative, field-based practices.

Currently, the college’s student body consists of close to 800 undergraduate and over 3,000 graduate students. Approximately forty doctoral degrees (Ed.D. and Ph.D.) are awarded by the college each year.  Surveys indicate that our teacher certification graduates, averaging over 600 per year, are hired soon after graduation and typically remain in the metropolitan Detroit area.

The College theme, The Effective Urban Educator: Reflective, Innovative and Committed to Diversity, reflects the mission of the college and is the driving force of our commitment to education.  We are proud of the education our students receive with its emphasis on diversity, innovation, technology and state-of-the-art research based practices.  Our professors are internationally recognized scholars and leaders in their fields who pride themselves in providing their students with programs based on high-quality standards.  College programs are accredited through their national organizations and by the Michigan Department of Education.  We continually work to improve our programs and to ensure that our students graduate with a sound and strong education in their field.

Welcome, again, to the College of Education at Wayne State University!   We appreciate your interest, and are hopeful that you will find our web site informative and helpful.  If you have questions, please send an e-mail to askcoe@wayne.edu.

Sincerely,

Paula C. Wood, Ph.D.

Dean, College of Education
