The Graduation Process

So you expect to graduate soon - congratulations! There's one more very important step that you must complete:

You must apply for graduation before the start of the semester in which you plan to graduate.

For example, if you plan to graduate after completing the Winter term (your final course is usually ED 7999), you must submit your application before the Winter term starts. Once classes start, you're too late - you'll have to wait until the next opportunity. Don't bother asking for an exception, because this rule is strictly enforced.

How to Apply

You apply for graduation at the Office of the Registrar. You can download the form here (scroll down to "Degree or Certificate Application"). There is a small fee when you apply ($25 as of this writing).

The Process

When you submit the application, the Registrar performs a graduation audit to verify that you have actually completed the required work. They will compare your Plan of Work and your transcript. The Registrar will inform the Graduate School of their findings:

  • If you have completed the requirements (or are taking the final course), the Graduate School will contact you with information about obtaining a cap and gown, ticket availability, etc.
  • If you have not completed the requirements, the Graduate School will be notified of that fact.

If You Haven't Finished

If you apply for graduation but have not met the requirements, you will need to reapply at a later date - again, before the start of classes in the semester during which you plan to graduate. You will not have to pay the fee again.
