Professional StandardsWith today's increasing emphasis on professional integrity, many organizations are creating and/or refining their field's standards. Instructional Technology has detailed and comprehensive standards for practitioners and theorists. The IT department here at WSU has recently been evaluated by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, AECT (the accrediting body in the IT field). Not only was our program approved for continued accreditation, but our review was heralded as one of the best ever submitted. (AECT standards) The International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (ibstpi) was founded as a not-for-profit corporation in 1984. Its mission is to improve individual and organizational performance by articulating and promoting the integrity of professional practice through research, development, definition of competencies and education. The ibstpi Competencies Board was given the task of creating specific competencies for IT professionals. Dr. Tim Spannaus is Past-President of the Board and Dr. Rita Richey is a past member and former Vice-president for Research of the Board. Their participation ensures that WSU Instructional Technology courses promote the competencies. Specific competencies have been developed for Instructional designers, evaluators, instructors, and training managers. Students may wish to familiarize themselves with these competencies before creating their official Plan of Work that defines the academic path to their degree completion. (ibstpi). Standards for Technology Integration in the K-12 SettingIn a unique partnership with teachers and teacher educators, curriculum and education associations, government, businesses, and private foundations, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has responded to calls for educational technology standards, guidelines, and tools with its National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) Project. This project specifies performance standards for teachers integrating technology. (ISTE standards) The State
of Michigan has also identified performance
standards needed for its new technology endorsement for K-12 teachers.
WSU is approved to offer this endorsement.
