Education Specialist Certficate
in Instructional Technology

The Educational Specialist Certificate is designed for those who already have a Master's Degree in an area other than Instructional Technology. As such, students in this program are normally new to the field.

The Educational Specialist Certificate requires 36 hours beyond a Masters and is post-graduate work that can serve as preliminary work toward a doctorate. It is possible for a student to apply Educational Specialist work to the doctoral program.

Persons may have relevant undergraduate and graduate degrees from a variety of areas but most are new to the IT field.

Specializations: Persons seeking an Educational Specialist may choose to a specific program emphasis from one of the following three areas:

Emphasis in Performance Improvement and Training

Designed for those interested in working as instructional designers or performance technologists in business, industrial, health care, higher education, military and government settings.

Backgrounds: Relevant undergraduate degrees from a variety of areas such as Business Administration, Nursing, Psychology, Education, or Speech. Students may also have experience in training design, but now wish to learn more about non-training interventions to solve performance problems.

Emphasis in K-12 Technology Integration

Designed for those interested in technology integration into the classroom and applying principles of Instructional Technology in school settings. It is relevant to careers as classroom teachers, media specialists, technology coordinators, school administrators, and other specialized school personnel.

Backgrounds: Undergraduate degrees in an area of education are the most common.

Note that this program does not lead to teacher certification; however, with additional coursework, certification can be obtained from the teacher education program within the College.

Emphasis in Interactive Technologies

Designed for those interested in working with the design and development of advanced technologies or as an e-learning specialist.

Backgrounds: Relevant undergraduate degrees from a variety of areas such as Computer Science, Psychology, Education, or Speech. Competence in basic computer operation, Microsoft® Windows operations, and file management are needed.
