In the fall, application materials are mailed to public and private high schools in Southeastern Michigan. 

Each high school may nominate up to four (4) students; additional student names may be submitted only on a space available basis.

Teachers should nominate students who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for scientific studies. They may be nominated as a paper presenter or participant only. Although the four (4) students nominated from each school do not have to present papers to participate, it is strongly encouraged, as this is a primary focus of the Symposium.

The JSHS nomination form must be signed by both the accompanying teacher and the principal.
