The advent of convergent technologies has brought rapid change resulting a major enhancements in the way organizations conduct business including training and development. This has resulted in a digital knowledge-driven global environment consumed by fierce competition for resources, markets, and knowledge workers.  Knowledge worker is an individual that primarily works with and produces information as a product/service. Thus, increasing the number of individuals being offered a different way to look at education that can assist them in valuing education and become knowledge workers.

Taking up the challenge, Wayne State University's Volunteers, Administrators, and Coaches (VAC) program has collaborated with the Detroit Housing Commission to create the Detroit Housing Commission Collaborative (DHCC). DHCC’s focus develop a module-based year around after-school program that combines convergent journalism,  multimedia ,and sports enhance the information-literacy, technology-literacy, self-esteem, and physical wellness of community residents (mainstream and special needs) in a manner that allows them to actively participate in the creation of a pipeline for new industries aimed at fueling Metro-Detroit’s transformation into a creative economy.
