May 8, 2010
This event is proposed as a lecture series that will be free and open to the public and part of the curriculum for the Wayne State University graduate level Early Childhood Policy Certificate. The attendees will be engaged in Advocacy Groups in which they will design ongoing plans to influence public policy related to African American children in school. Foundations will be contacted for funding of this lecture series.
The goals of the Public Policy Lecture Series are to:
Provide organized advocacy for African American children
Promote discussion of policy issues among academics and policymakers/advocates affecting African American children
Promote development of policies and practices that will enhance optimal achievement of African American children in school.
Each forum will take place on Friday from 1:00pm to 4:00 pm.
1:00 to 2:30 pm: Lecture
2:30 to 4:00 pm: Advocacy Groups
Presentation handouts and transcripts will be available for each lecture on the ISAAC website.
All attendees will be assigned to Advocacy Groups that will meet following the lecture. These groups will be organized into online communities for frequent contact. Very succinct little action steps will be planned that can be implemented the day of the lecture series such as on the spot cell phone calls to policy makers and email and facsimile messages to legislators.
